Navigating the Latest IMO Regulations: Compliance in the Marine Sector
The marine industry is continuously evolving, driven by technological advancements, environmental considerations, and regulatory changes. One of the most significant developments in recent years is the introduction of new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations aimed at reducing the environmental impact of maritime activities. These regulations have far-reaching implications for the industry, particularly concerning the types of fuels and lubricants used by vessels. In this challenging landscape, Moov Fuel stands out as a leader, always ahead of the curve when it comes to compliance and regulations. In the article below, our General Head of Commercial and Industrial, Hein Mocke, and Sales manager, Le Roux Visser, unpack how our team can assist with all your marine lubricant and marine fuel needs, ensuring your operations remain smooth and compliant.
Understanding the Latest IMO Regulations
“The maritime industry is currently navigating significant regulatory changes, particularly with the revised IMO regulations that took effect in 2023,” says Mocke. “The IMO has outlined robust objectives to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the shipping sector. According to Greencarrier, the IMO aims to cut GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. Furthermore, their long-term goal is to completely eliminate GHG emissions from international shipping within this century,” says Mocke.
The International Council on Green Transportation elaborates on one of the IMO’s key regulations introduced in 2023 the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), which mandates that all ships measure and report their energy efficiency to reduce GHG emissions. This is complemented by the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which requires ships to track and report their annual operational carbon intensity, ensuring continuous improvement in their energy performance.
“Both measures aim to steer the maritime industry towards more sustainable practices,” adds Visser. “Moov Fuel is at the forefront of these regulatory changes, ensuring compliance and providing support for the maritime sector. As a leader in marine fuel and lubricants, Moov Fuel offers a comprehensive range of products and services to meet the industry’s evolving needs.
